Assignment 2A: Bug List

  1. 1. Getting about seven tickets this summer for parking in the staff parking lot when Park-and-Ride decals were in the red decal spots I was supposed to be in

WHY it exists: The people with Park-and-Ride decals likely don’t want such a long commute from all of the park and ride lots. Also, they may know when the when the ticketing officers come around and they might have a better gauge of how long they can stay in the red lots. Also, the University likely doesn’t want to go through all of the funding to build more on-campus student parking

  1. 2. Companies like Disney that are becoming more profit-driven than seemingly necessary through such endeavors as acquiring ESPN, Marvel, and Lucasfilm

WHY it exists: Disney has to make a profit to keep it in the black and to keep providing their unmatched quality of service in their market. This includes things like having excellent maintenance at their parks, capitalizing on new and/or innovative technologies to use on their rides, and having the ability try out different products and to use different marketing strategies like their streaming service. Also, they do need funding to keep revamping the parks.

  1. 3. When I bite into a burrito at Chipotle and it falls out on the other end.

WHY it exists: When you bite into the burrito the pressure pushes all of the contents out of the tortilla. The tortilla isn’t strong enough to hold the weight of all of the ingredients in it as this weight is continually pushed downward.

  1. 4. The sentiment that Apple products are better than all other electronics when the technology is lacking in some areas

WHY it exists: The Macintosh was the first successful personal computer with icons to interact with, a built-in screen, and a mouse. The iPhone was the first successfully mass-produced touch screen cell phone. The integration of their software even while using multiple devices of their products is unmatched. Apple is always at the top for providing innovative technologies to consumers, even though they may not lead in them inventing them. Also, they have a really interesting and captivating way of marketing to consumers.

  1. 5. Getting headaches in the afternoon when I haven’t eaten much during the day.

WHY it exists: The brain needs at least 150 grams of carbohydrates a day to keep functioning. Furthermore, the rest of your body needs food for energy. The brain is going to keep functioning as much as it can, no matter the circumstance, so the headache is just a response of having to function through unfavorable conditions.

  1. 6. When my computer shuts off randomly and it is not even close to a low battery, or when the screen blinks off and on uncontrollably.

WHY it exists: The computer likely needs a break from the number of tabs I have open. Also, I never turn it off after I am done using it, so that probably takes a toll on the computer’s function. Also, I’m pretty sure the touch screen function has been slightly damaged from being thrown around in my backpack

  1. 7. When my phone shuts off randomly, even though it is fairly new.

WHY it exists: I am sure I have too many apps on it for it to function properly. It is a small, cheap phone with limited space, and I have almost maximized that space. It was meant to be an easy phone for someone who would use it to perform basic functions, not a temporary phone for a college student.

  1. 8. When classes require you to read the textbook.

WHY it exists: Professors really want students to learn and get the most out of the classes, and it is hard to do so by doing the minimum requirements to pass. The professors don’t have enough time to go through each and every part of the textbook so they expect students to in order to know the material well.

  1. 9. When assignments, and especially exams, are due at 11:59:00 pm instead of 11:59:59 pm

WHY it exists: Professors expect students to prioritize their classes and care enough about their assignments so they don’t have to rely on the final minute or seconds. The 59 second difference is a reminder or is encouragement to be proactive and get things done well before the deadlines.

  1. 10. The UF Bookstore having items that are more expensive than on Amazon or at Walmart, but not having enough money to put up the cost ahead of time.

WHY it exists: The UF bookstore provides a service to students by having the products readily available at almost all times. Thus, they can give a higher price for having better time and place utility, or convenience.

  1. 11. Buying things online from Asian countries and having it fit terribly, then having multiples of the same clothing item in different sizes

WHY it exists: The sizing systems differ in most countries and sizing in Asian countries does not always translate to the United States sizing system well. Also, typically the body types for people in Asia differ from people in the U.S. so the way in which they make the clothes and which body parts they account for is likely different.

  1. 12. Connecting flights being more expensive than direct, nonstop flights, even though they take more of your time.

WHY it exists: The airlines provide a service by giving you two different flights for a lower price than buying them separately. Sometimes, the low price is even offered by two different airlines. Even though there is a layover, you are still getting a good deal.

  1. 13. People who stand and get their stuff as soon as the flight lands, but the door hasn’t even opened yet.

WHY it exists: Everyone has been on the flight for a long time. Some people may just want to be as prepared as possible to leave the plane, and furthermore the airport, in a timely fashion.

  1. 14. When airlines don’t board their planes from back to front.

WHY it exists: It is important to make customers that have paid more for their seating feel like it was worth it. This means getting them on the plane and accommodating their needs as soon as possible. This also means making sure they have ample space for the overhead bins.

  1. 15. Having a flight be delayed.

WHY it exists: Everything cannot work perfectly when you’re dealing with the many moving parts that come with an airport. Some flights may have taken off late, so they come in late. Some flights may come in early or on time so the boarding dock is clear, but now that plane needs more fuel so that you and your fellow passengers can make it to your destination safely. Also, there might just be some traffic on the runway delaying the plane you are trying to get on from getting to the boarding dock.

  1. 16. When there are multiple days in a row of 100-degree heat, and classes still aren’t cancelled.

WHY it exists: The University puts education as a top priority at almost all costs. The health of UF students is very important but this phenomenon didn’t show to be extremely detrimental to students’ health. People live and function in 100-degree weather constantly in the Southwest part of the U.S. As long as students were not outside for extended periods of time, they would be fine, and this should not happen since all classes are inside.

  1. 17. Still having class during the impending doom of Hurricane Irma even though there was a State of Emergency for the entire state, and winds were high in Gainesville,

WHY it exists: The winds were not fast enough to stop buses from operating. Since buses were operating, all students and faculty had a way of getting to class. Thus, classes were still conducted. Also, no one was actually put in harms way.

  1. 18. When my YouTube videos buffer.

WHY it exists: One reason could be that I don’t have enough high-speed data to stream the video offline. It also could be that the internet connection that I am using operates at a lower-than-optimal speed.

  1. 19. When professors stop instructing when people start talking even though everyone in the class pays for their education, not just those few people.

WHY it exists: Professors want students to learn just as much as they want to teach the subject. They may feel as though students around the talkers can’t learn well until the problem is corrected. Also, the professor wants to be respected for teaching students the necessary knowledge to achieve their goals.

  1. 20. Having to taking classes like Organic Chemistry and Physics when they rarely apply to my pre-health goals.

WHY it exists: There are foundational aspects of the body, and of health care in general, that require knowledge of these subject. Even though I may not see or use these concepts on a daily basis, they are the reason why other things that I will use daily exist, like medication.

Reflection:
I found this exercise to be rather difficult. At first I thought “It can’t be that hard. Things bug me all the time!” Therefore, the approach I took was to live life for the week and write things down as they come up. However, I only come up with about seven things after a week of life. Since, I don’t typically have a pessimistic view on life, I only wrote down the things that really stood out to me, and not every single thing that bugged me. Since I was so far behind, last night I had to actively think of things that grind my gears, and I even asked my friends to see if I could relate to their struggles. I found that it was a difficult activity to complete, but I think it mostly came from my initial methodology. I think if I start the assignment with the second method from the beginning, then it wouldn’t have been as hard.
